South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group (SPSSEG) used this funding for restoration activities in Pickering Passage, on Puget Sound near Allyn, which is used by salmonids and other important species. The site was severely modified in the late 1950's by the Pirate’s Cove County Club. The spit had been continuous with an opening at one end near a fresh water outlet stream. In 1959 the Army Corps of Engineers permitted the closure of the north end of the spit to form a lagoon. A spillway near the center of the spit was dredged, and a log weir and access road were installed to control water elevations within the lagoon. The goal was for this backwatered area to flood and ebb with tides and to maintain water elevations for recreation. Unbeknownst to the Club at the time, the original project did not function as intended. Severe erosion began almost immediately after the modification, and the breached spit and beach were flattening and slowly filling the estuary. Littoral drift was also affected. SPSSEG worked with the current Pirates Cove Board on the restoration proposal. This project removed a road crossing to the spit and added fill to the breach in the spit, so that there is now a permanent tidally influenced inlet and outlet to the small estuary.
