DESCRIPTION
South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group (SPSSEG) used this funding to complete a fish passage project on Hiawata Creek. Hiawata Creek is a small drainage that supports chum, coho, coastal cutthroat, and resident fish that is located 600 meters upstream of the estuary in Pickering Passage near Allyn, WA. The upper wetland headwaters provide rich rearing habitat, while the lower stream reach provides spawning opportunities. The previous concrete culvert had been undersized and failing. Due to high flows, the large outfall drop, and the small diameter culvert, the downstream channel had become severely degraded. A 60 meter section had eroded and become an unnatural gradient barrier for salmon. In the mid-1980's, the WDFW installed a roughened channel fishway downstream and installed baffles inside the culvert. This approach worked for about 6 years, providing salmon access to the upper watershed. WDFW monitored the salmon usage and observed a peak high of 40 coho and 860 chum. This project installed a multi-plate 20-foot wide arch culvert with concrete strip footings to improve fish passage. Large woody debris controls were installed downstream to maintain and enhance the stream elevation and profile.
