DESCRIPTION
Capitol Land Trust and Mason County permanently protected this 95-acre parcel containing 2000 feet of intact, functional marine shoreline, nearshore and estuarine habitat on upper Oakland Bay as well as approximately ¾ of a mile mile of Malaney Creek riparian habitat from estuary to uplands. A rich and diverse native vegetation buffer lines the property's marine shorelines and associated uplands, providing feeding, resting and transitioning habitat for salmonids (chum, Chinook, cutthroat, steelhead, sockeye and coho) and an excellent recruitment source of large woody debris (LWD). The site's forested riparian channel provides habitat for adult and juvenile salmonids (coho, chum, steelhead and cutthroat). This project built upon cooperation, leveraging strong partnerships and financial support to acquire intact nearshore, estuary, and riparian habitat. The project complements the previously funded Malaney Creek Fish Passage Project . The project site was identified as a Priority Conservation Area in the 2002 Oakland Bay/Hammersley Inlet Nearshore Habitat Assessment. The acquisition is one of the region's largest remaining intact shoreline properties and had been threatened by development. Current regulations would have allowed for 19 homes along the shoreline. The land owner had kept the property off the market for two years to enable conservation efforts, but had indicated that the property would be put up for sale in January 2005 if conservation efforts had not been successful by that time.
