DESCRIPTION
The McDonald Fish Passage Projects 1+2 will replace two fish passage barriers with adequately sized structures to restore anadromous access to nearly one mile of habitat while reducing the risk of road failure and damage to downstream habitat. The project sites are located at approximately river mile 0.5 on an unnamed, right bank tributary to Skookum Creek (14.0020), southwest of Shelton, WA. The existing culverts are 200 meters apart, are undersized and exceed the velocity requirements for fish passage. In addition to creating fish passage barriers, the culverts constrict stream flow causing downstream erosion and limiting downstream transport of large woody debris, streambed material and high flows. The unnamed creek supports runs of chum, coho, cutthroat, and steelhead trout. The newly accessible habitat will potentially increase the distribution and production of salmonids in this watershed. SPSSEG will work with a contracted engineer, landowner, and WDFW to initiate a cost effective and ecologically beneficial project. This partnership may lead to future opportunities for salmon habitat restoration projects.
