DESCRIPTION
South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group (SPSSEG) restored fish and tidal access to Mission Creek and the shoreline surrounding the stream's outlet. Mission Creek flows through Priest Point Park and discharges into Budd Inlet, Puget Sound near Olympia, WA. An earthen road embankment was constructed in the early 20th century to provide vehicle access across the mouth of Mission Creek. An overflow weir box and outlet culvert were installed to manage freshwater discharge and limit saltwater inundation into the area upstream of the road embankment. The existing road embankment and culvert severly impacted upstream fish passage and limited estuarine function at the site. This restoration project focused on removing human induced stressors, including the road embankment, culvert, beach armor, invasive vegetation, and removed some sediment to help reclaim the small estuary. This project benefits estuarine usage for Chinook, coho, and chum that utilize embayments in Budd Inlet. The Mission Creek project was identified in many local and regional watershed planning efforts including the WRIA 13 Three-Year workplan. A conceptual design memo for Mission Creek was completed in 2006 by SPSSEG, and updated in 2011 by PSNERP. The Mission Creek Estuary Restroation project was a collaboration with the Port of Olympia, City of Olympia, and South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group.
