DESCRIPTION
Building upon the momentum of the recent Creosote Removal Project (3-2013) between DNR, the Squaxin Island Tribe, Sarah Smyth McIntosh and Delata Illahee LP I and SPSSEG, we seek additional funding to complete design and assessment work for restoration and enhancements at the Frank's Landing shoreline In Olympia. Small delta and the mouth of Schneider creek on site.
This project completed preliminary designs to improve onsite habitat conditions for juvenile salmonids, forage fish and shellfish (Olympia Oysters) by removing creosote structures, re-contouring the shoreline, and adding new sands and gravels and shoreforms that are beneficial to all three species mentioned above. The project scope was increased to include two additional adjoining parcels for conceputal designs and to include a feasability study for daylighting Schnieder Creek. A cultural resources assessment was also conducted. These designs build upon the momentum of the design work funded by the WRIA 13 Project Development Grant and the recent Creosote Removal Project (3-2013) between DNR, the Squaxin Island Tribe and SPSSEG.
The Chinook Recovery Plan for South Puget Sound rates the overall project area as high priority- restore for proximity to fish-bearing streams. The document notes that the entire lower inlet is impaired by multiple stressors but remains a Critical Faunal Area. In addition, the site is part of a larger effort to restore pedestrian access, water quality and salmonid habitats in lower Budd Inlet and offers excellent opportunities for public engagement and support due to the high traffic nature of the area.
