DESCRIPTION
Wild Fish Conservancy (WFC) used this funding to determine and correct water type classifications in approximately 70 watersheds in WRIAs 13 and 14 (Cooper Point and Steamboat Island Peninsula) using established protocols for visual and electrofishing surveys. Effective salmon recovery requires the restoration and protection of fish habitats. Thurston County stream buffer width requirements are set using a water type classification system. Existing water type maps demonstrably under-represented the extent of fish and fish habitat, and many streams were mapped incorrectly or not at all.
Using GPS, WFC accurately mapped previously unmapped and incorrectly mapped water courses. In addition to correcting the misclassification of water type to ensure informed and responsible management of these watersheds, this assessment provides species-specific distribution information to assist with Lead Entity restoration project identification and prioritization efforts. This project evaluated the magnitude and extent of water type inaccuracies that exist in unincorporated Thurston County. The results of the assessment are incorporated into an internet-based interactive GIS available to resource managers and the general public. Specifically, WFC coordinated with the Thurston County Geodata Center, a project partner, to ensure that the county's GIS is updated to accurately reflect the results of the assessment. The GIS complements similar WFC projects performed in King, Jefferson, and Island County watersheds (see http://wildfishconservancy.org/resources/maps )
