DESCRIPTION
The Deschutes Floodplain Expansion Acquisition Project was a fee simple acquisition on the middle Deschutes River SE of the Olympia Airport in Thurston County that conserved 1,800 feet of mainstem Deschutes River on 58 acres. The property is undeveloped, with a wide and diverse riparian buffer with active side channels. Much of the remaining forested uplands are in the Deschutes River floodplain. This project supports Deschutes River Coho, winter steelhead and cutthroat trout. The project builds upon Capitol Land Trust’s adjacent land holding, the Stewart Preserve, which already conserves 45 acres and 3,700 feet of Deschutes River shoreline. Capitol Land Trust is also seeking funding from multiple sources to acquire the adjacent 427 acres to the north and east and was ranked first in WRIA 13 for the 2013 SRFB funding cycle for that phase of the project.
