DESCRIPTION
This project sought to develop full designs and permits for LWD placement on the mainstem Deschutes River, approximate river mile 21, in Thurston County. The sponsor created a stakeholder group (a sub-set of the WRIA 13 TAG) to review preliminary designs and choose a preferred option to develop to full design stage. Additionally, the sponsor has conducted landowner meetings with affected and adjacent landowners to ensure understanding of the project and its importance for all salmonid species and the water quality in the watershed.
The project contracted with licensed engineers (Cardno-Entrix) and appropriate specialists to determine the best placement for four (4) to six (6) large wood placement structures that consider habitat needs, landowner issues, and public safety. One of the landowners decided not to have restoration done on a key property.
The documents completed at the time of project stoppage include a 60% design report completed in DRAFT (without appendicies) and concept designs to select a prefered alternative. While we did select a design based on this document (alternative #1, Complex Cribwall from alternative 'B'-partial restoration) we were not able to have the design team complete the prefered design. They were able to provide various cost estimates based on the various design types which helped us to determine which alternative was best suited for the site, current budgets and the high priority placed on safety due to the high levels of recrational activity in this reach.
