Project seeks to remove all of the 200 foot rock revetment and associated fill that occupies the upper intertidal zone. This affects nearshore processes and limits opportunity for forage fish spawning. Healthy forage fish populations are critical for salmon recovery. Project would restore over 250 feet shoreline, nearshore processes and intertidal habitat at Burfoot County Park by removing or reconfiguring the revetment and associated fill. Removal would help to facilitate sediment deposition and transport along the shorelines via drift cells that are critical to shoreline health through their deposition of nourishing new substrates.   The overall project area has been rated as high priority- protect for forage fish spawning and high priority- restore for sediment source restoration according to the Chinook Recovery Plan for South Sound. The document also notes that the entire area is a Critical Faunal Area and notes that Burfoot Park is relatively intact. The project will also provide appropriate forage fish (sand lance, surf smelt) spawning elevations in the mid to upper intertidal range and would provide additional forage fish spawning substrates/gravels. Project also seeks to maintain local ADA access to the beach as this is the only park in the county that offers nearshore access to those with disabilities.
