DESCRIPTION
South Sound GREEN has been actively involving students from around Thurston County in salmon habitat related projects. This group contributes monitoring data and hands on implementation to a variety of streams in WRIA 13. Funding for plant materials and supplies for planting are often difficult to obtain. The success of this group to obtain landowner participation for riparian plantings is excellent. These project funds would supply necessary materials for CD approved planting plans for WRIA 13. Collectively, in the two sites, approximately five acres of riparian lands would be restored.
Woodard Creek: This is a large landowner with 1,500 feet of Woodard Creek. This project will revege the slope and streamside adjacent to a large wetland. The buffer for this project is extensive.
Percival Creek: This project is a continuation to work done by GREEN and SPSSEG to provide a spawning pad. Vegetation is needed to re-establish riparian corridor through this reach. Several private landowners will be a part of this effort.
Enhancing riparian area and functionality increases the diversity of the stream system, provides habitat and improves water quality. Riparian cover is a critical issue in habitat limitations. Draft limiting factors analysis for HB2496 shows lack of large wood, temperature impacted riparian canopy and high sediment as critical factors of WRIA 13.
