DESCRIPTION
This project is to replace a private access road culvert that has created a passage barrier to the upper reaches of this system. This culvert is in full failure and the landowner does not have the financial resources to either remove or replace this structure. It is the CD's intent to remove elevated bed load up stream of the culvert and install a new crossing. Fencing of the stream corridor for livestock exclusion along with riparian planting will occur along with implementation of farm BMPs. This project is directly upstream to Thurston County's culvert replacement project on Carpenter Rd. Revegetation of riparian corridor, approximately 2.02 acres. Benefits to salmon: This system is utilized by Coho and some Chum. Habitat of this tributary to Woodland Creek is poor. The main limiting factors addressed in the HB 2496 draft Limiting Factors Analysis shows this system to have fish passage issues on private lands, cattle access, fecal coliform, turbidity and temperature. This project will remove those barriers, cattle access and establish riparian vegetation for long term habitat benefit.Scientific basis: The draft limiting factors analysis for HB2496 and the independent review provided by the South Puget Sound subregional work group was headed by Thurston County. This project has landowner commitment with design not yet developed. Planning is to be completed w/design by August and implementation of in-stream work and fencing done by Sept. 99.
