DESCRIPTION
The Capitol Land Trust, together with its project partners, conserved via conservation easement approximately 92-acres of highly functional deciduous and coniferous forested uplands, palustrine forested freshwater wetlands and ravines. The property contains a portion of an unnamed perennial stream that drains to Gull Harbor. Gull Harbor is one of southern Puget Sound’s most intact estuarine environments, providing high quality habitat for coho, steelhead, chum, sea-run cutthroat, and chinook salmon as well as important prey species such as sand lance, surf smelt and Pacific herring. The conservation of this site, which was threatened with residential development, is part of a multi-project effort to protect and restore fish passage to the unnamed perrenial stream. Other active and planned projects will remove two downstream fish passage barriers. Additionally, the project is part of a multi-partner, multi-landowner effort to conserve ecosystem functionality and connectivity between Budd and Henderson Inlets in deep southern Puget Sound. The current project site is adjacent to approximately 2 miles of marine shorelines and 150 acres of upland habitat already protected with conservation easements through previous project phases.
