DESCRIPTION
Wild Fish Conservancy used this funding to undertake a restoration project on Snyder Cove Creek, a perennial, fish-bearing watershed that flows into the east side of Eld Inlet in Thurston County. The creek’s watershed is largely intact, protected within the The Evergreen State College (TESC) forest. It offers excellent spawning and rearing habitat, and supports populations of cutthroat trout, sculpin, and lamprey. Sunset Beach Drive crossed the creek at its tidally-influenced mouth through an undersized (3 foot diameter) culvert, creating a full or partial barrier to the upstream migration of fish, effectively blocking almost one mile of fish habitat. The watershed has the potential to support populations of coho, chum, resident and sea-run cutthroat, and possibly steelhead. Wild Fish Conservancy implemented the preferred passage restoration alternative: removal of the barrier culvert; installation of a 14-foot wide, 10-foot tall, 45-foot long box culvert. They also completed minor localized channel restoration and implementation monitoring. Evergreen State College completely supported removing the barrier, and provided cash match for 50% of the estimated project costs. Effectiveness monitoring was performed by the conservancy and the college for three years post-project. This project complemented a People for Puget Sound feasibility assessment for removing a bulkhead adjacent to the barrier culvert.
