DESCRIPTION
Thurston County used this funding to replace two concrete culverts with a 28 foot long bridge, which opened up about 5.5 miles of important upstream habitat primarily for chum and coho with smaller numbers of Chinook, cutthroat, and steelhead. The project is on Woodland Creek at Pleasant Glade Road, a public county road in Thurston County, north of Lacey. Goal of the project was to remove a fish barrier due to undersized, perched culverts. Primary habitat restored was in-stream. Replacing these two 48" culverts was listed as a high priority in the Woodland and Woodard Creek Comprehensive Drainage Basin Plan, 1995, in the Woodland Creek Enhancement Plan, 1993, and in the Habitat Limiting Factors Report for WRIA 13, 1999. This project was a critical link to other restoration efforts along Woodland Creek. Removal of the culverts and replacement with a 28 foot bridge, addition of streambed gravels, revegetation and addition of several pieces of large wood contribute to a more natural stream profile. The project was sponsored by Thurston County Roads and Transportation Services (now Thurston County Public Works).
