DESCRIPTION
The Lower Hamilton Creek Restoration Phase II project will implement proven techniques to address limiting factors that continue to hinder reproductive success and recovery of ESA listed populations of Lower Columbia Coho, chum, winter steelhead, and Chinook. The first phase of this project will begin at the head of Hamilton Springs and restore over 800ft of the groundwater fed chum spawning channel and construct another 400ft groundwater connective channel parallel to the existing channel. In addition, this project will install complexity log jams through 2,900 feet of lower Hamilton Creek main stem to scour pools, create anabranching island network, sort spawning gravels, and stabilize eroding banks. In addition to the in-stream habitat benefits, this project will also restore 3 acres of floodplain and riparian corridor by increasing tree density and diversity to increase shade, contribute to stabilizing stream banks, while also a source of woody debris recruitment. These treatments will increase the quantity and quality of rearing and spawning habitat and bolster the future production of salmonid stocks returning to Hamilton Creek watershed.
