Project #1 focused on road abandonment and decommissioning 3 miles of forest road that had the potential to deliver materials and negatively impact aquatic resources, primarily tributaries and the mainstem of Ellsworth Creek. TNC contracted with Ohrberg Excavation, a local road construction company that specializes in forest road construction to complete this work. The majority of the work was completed during the summers to reduce any impacts to the stream systems. In all, 3.2 miles of road was decommissioned as part of this grant. The decommissioning was conducted over a three year time period. In the early spring months, TNC planted the decommissioned roads with Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and western red cedar to aid in the restoration efforts of the watershed to help to stabilize the soils early. We anticipate that large amounts of red alder and western hemlock will naturally recolonize the sites. In areas near streams, the roads contractor also applied a grass seed mix to reduce erosion and applied straw in areas that had the potential for erosion. TNC used time lapse videos for areas of the road decommissioning to help monitor progress over time Project #2 focused on upgrading the current road system by repairing roads and replacing non-functioning, undersized culverts; installing and re-establishing ditches; and resurfacing roads using hard rock resources present on site. This work focused on improving the existing roads and drainage structures to reduce chronic sediment from entering stream systems. TNC began work by prioritizing the culvert replacements and developing an accurate mapping system and rating each culvert and road condition based upon hazard risk and potential sediment delivery. TNC foresters then contracted with Ohrberg Excavating LLC from Cathlamet, WA to install the culverts, and upgrade the road network to establish proper drainage and water shedding. During the project, TNC installed 79 culverts and upgraded 7.5 miles of road that will improve drainage and allow for future restoration activities to continue within the watershed. Initially, TNC planned to crush rock onsite but there was enough rock present on site that rock processing was not required. The cost savings allowed additional installation of more culverts on the property. The overarching goal of this project was to improve stream function and productivity with a goal of restoring forest habitats and watershed processes necessary to facilitate the long-term recovery of salmon spawning and rearing habitat for Coho, steelhead, cutthroat, Chinook, and Chum.
