DESCRIPTION
This project would support the removal of one large log stringer bridge, built in the 1960's, in the upper mainstem of Ellsworth Creek. The bridge is deteriorating and while failure is not imminent, it is becoming increasingly likely and would result in significant impacts within this salmon bearing stream. Rather than replacement, the Conservancy is choosing to completely remove the bridge and all associated fill from the site and to back out about 800-1000 feet of road through additional decommissioning. An in stream habitat inventory of the entire Ellsworth stream system shows that this part of the system has low volumes of large wood in the stream. Evidence of past extraction of large wood is evident which was often required by forest practices at the time this area was logged. The impact to stream complexity and function has been significant, resulting in a reduced capacity for the stream to support salmonids. The project will assess conditions of 1 mile of stream habitat and design the placement of large wood in specific locations where it will help restore instream habitat and/or enhance connectivity and condition of off-channel habitat in this portion of TNC's Ellsworth Creek Preserve. About 2000 feet of adjacent stream will be enhanced at the time the stringer bridge is removed and the remainder will be treated in 3 to 5 years when TNC conducts restoration logging adjacent to that area. Implementation of that portion of the work will be the focus of a future project.
