DESCRIPTION
The parcel is located near Curtis in Lewis County. It includes a perched wetland, hillside seeps, and a small stream that drains across this parcel, under Roundtree Road and into the South Fork Chehalis River. This project will acquire title to the 75 acre parcel.
The problem is that the owner's family has grown up and has no interest in owning or maintaining the site. This parcel is owned by an older single woman who is willing to sell. The problem is invasive plants where farming practices once controlled them. But the local wildlife uses much of the site; acquisition and restoration will create a healthy ecosystem.
The site includes a mature forest above a sloped hillside, a small valley through which the creek runs, and a small field used as pasture.
The mature forest is appox. 400' in width and runs along the west property boundary, a distance of 0.40 miles. Some replanting or natural seeding has occurred, but Scots Broom has taken over most of the slope down to the pasture.
The valley floor in the north 1/3 of the parcel also has Scots Broom and hawthorn in abundance. The forested sides of the small valley are in good condition with deciduous trees along the steam and evergreens on the north portion. The stream appears to have been channeled along the south side of the small valley and shows active beavers.
The channelization of the unnamed stream has resulted in faster run-off and erosion, which mostly settles prior to entering the S. Fork Chehalis River. Channeli
