This project established the ecological conditions for dramatic improvement to the riparian habitat on the Satsop River. Removing large infestations of knotweed allowed for native plants to recolonize those areas in the coming years. To assist this habitat restoration process, CNLM conducted fall plantings of native shrubs and trees. To also assuage landowner concerns about streambank erosion, The sponsor focused its planting efforts on plants such as willows with robust root systems that are excellent for stabilizing vulnerable streambanks. Willows also grow quickly to help shade the river for better salmon habitat. This project dramatically reduced the knotweed infestation on the Satsop River below Cook Creek. Among the properties targeted for knotweed removal, the Sanders property on the East Fork of the River represented a top priority for its upstream location and expansive knotweed infestation. Controlling knotweed on the Sanders property should dramatically reduce downstream spreading. With this project the sponsor was able to conduct two separate treatments of the Sanders property knotweed during the summer of 2018. Multiple treatments in the same season has shown to increase efficacy and accelerate the removal process. Moving forward, knotweed treatments on the property can focus on full eradication now that the large patches are removed. In summary, this project was extremely successful for removing the largest, most upstream knotweed infestations on the Satsop River and then jump starting the restoration process with native plantings.
