DESCRIPTION
Lewis County Public Works is requesting $97,730 for the design of a fish passable structure at river mile 5.65 of the Middle Fork Newaukum River, Barrier Site ID 021(94001)(15790). Barrier 021(94001)(15790) is an existing 5' x 7' corrugated metal squash pipe, located at milepost (MP) 15.79 on Centralia- Alpha Road. This barrier was calculated to be 33 percent passable due to velocity. Once constructed this fish passable structure will restore access to 5.65 linear miles of potential habitat for all life stages of coho salmon and steelhead trout. While this project would provide no additional access until the downstream barrier, Site 021(45011)(07070) is removed, Site 021(45011)(07070) has received funding for replacement from the Fish Barrier Removal Board and is anticipated to be replaced with a fish passable structure in 2019. Additionally, all remaining upstream barriers have received funding through SRFB and USFWS and are anticipated to be replaced in 2018.
The MF Newaukum Fish Passage_Site ID 021(94001)(15790) project provided a final design and permits to replace an existing fish passage barrier with a fish passable structure. This design is for replacement of an existing 7-foot (ft) wide by 5-ft tall by 57-ft long corrugated metal squash pipe, which is only 33 percent passable due to velocity with a 22-ft wide by 9-ft tall by 50-ft long concrete box culvert. The site is located at milepost 15.79 on Centralia Alpha Road, on the Middle Fork Newaukum River. Replacement of this culvert, once constructed, is anticipated to restore access to 3.51 linear miles of habitat for coho salmon and 2.63 linear miles of habitat for steelhead trout according to the WDFW Chehalis Fish Passage Barrier Prioritization interactive mapper (March 2020). The final design packet includes 100 percent plans, a cost estimate, a design report and special provisions.
