DESCRIPTION
This project would involve removing two barrier culverts in close proximity to one another. They would be replaced by two larger culverts that would be passable to fish. It would open 3.6 miles of habitat to coho, steelhead, and cutthroat. The goal of this project is to replace two barrier culverts with larger countersunk fish passable culverts, restoring anadromous fish passage to 3.6 miles of upstream habitat. This will improve the road surface and road drainage to reduce sediment delivery to Scammon Creek. It will also eliminate the risk of catastrophic fill failure due to current undersized culverts that may become plugged or not handle 100 year storm flow. There are four barrier culverts located downstream of this project and no barrier culverts located upstream. Three of the culverts are located underneath county roads and will have to be addressed in the future. The culvert located on private land is technically a barrier but it is passable most of the time. A ranking was determined for these projects using the criteria developed by a ranking committee in the Priority Indexes Chehalis Basin Phase-2 Amendment 5 (Verd, 2007). Culvert 1403W10A is ranked as 561st in priority for replacement. Culvert 1403W10A is ranked as 272nd in priority for replacement. Other factors were also used to select these projects such as the quality of the habitat, and the low cost of the project.
