DESCRIPTION

This project is a combination of three different activities – 1. Fee title acquisition of 174.7 acres of Chehalis surge-plain bordering Elliott Slough. The property is comprised of emergent, scrub-shrub and forested wetlands with 1 mile of shoreline along Elliott Slough and at least 2 miles of shoreline along tributary sloughs. The land is located less than 1/2 miles downstream from the Chehalis Surge-Plain Natural Area Preserve. 2. Removal of invasive plants, primarily along a 1/3 mile long gravel access road in the SW quadrant and 3. Removal of small bridge which has fallen into the upper end of a tributary slough, adjacent to the access road. The goals of this project are to acquire a permanent protection of 174.7 acres of one of the western-most portions of the Chehalis Surge-Plain and its restoration to full fish passage and a completely native plant community. The objectives include purchase of the property from the Historic Seaport Authority, the removal of a small collapsed bridge over one tributary slough, the physical removal and/or treatment of invasive plant species, primarily along the Grays Harbor Public Utility District's access road, and the monitoring of success for at least one year following plant removal.
