DESCRIPTION
Lewis County will replace an existing fish-passage barrier culvert on Van Ornum Creek in Lewis County. This restoration project will replace the existing 4’ X 36’ corrugated steel round culvert located at milepost 2.386 on Bunker Creek Road. This culvert is estimated to be 0% passable due to an outfall drop of approximately 12 inches. This culvert has been ranked 17th on a list of priority culverts for replacement within the Chehalis Basin and assigned Priority Index of 18.47. An additional culvert, approximately 0.56 miles north of this culvert, has been ranked as number 51 on the list of priority culverts. This culvert (#51), is estimated to be 33% passable, and is being proposed from removal by the Lewis County Conservation District (LCCD). A stream survey of approximately 4.72 miles of Van Ornum Creek has been performed by the LCCD. Species known to utilize this stream include coho salmon and cutthroat trout. Replacement of the proposed culvert (#17) is estimated to restore unlimited access to an additional 0.68 linear miles of potential habitat and limited access to an additional 7.36 linear miles of habitat. According to the LCCD stream survey potential habitat will include approximately 16,952 square feet (0.39 acres) of spawning habitat and 123,481 square feet (2.83 acres) of rearing habitat for salmonids. If the LCCD replaces proposed culvert (#51), as part of a stand alone project, an areas of limited/seasonal access shall provide unlimited access.
