DESCRIPTION
This design-only stream restoration project is proposed by Thurston County Public Works and co sponsored with Mason Conservation District to improve fish habitat for coho, searun cutthroat and resident trout in an unnamed tributary to the Black River, locally called Dunnagan Creek. Location is Lat: 46.85093 Long: 123.10327, near 10534 Gate Road SW, S19-T16N-3W. Currently, the downstream low gradient channel is channelized and choked with reed canary grass, significantly reducing the conveyance capacity of the stream, with little riparian canopy. During high flow events, the stream overtops the culvert and flows over Gate Road, creating dangerous driving conditions and impeding fish passage, especially for fall migrating coho. Regular overtopping suggests the existing culvert is undersized, but the 2007 Lewis County Conservation District barrier survey did not consider it a fish barrier. The project will evaluate the hydrology of the watershed, including the existing culvert and approximately 700 feet of downstream channel and will identify three design alternatives. The alternatives will include culvert replacement if applicable, channel reconfiguration downstream, and riparian planting, monitoring and maintenance. Downstream property owners include WDFW, and Thurston County Parks, who support the project. After stakeholder review, one alternative will be selected, considering factors such as benefit to fish and cost eff
