DESCRIPTION
The Lewis County Conservation District prioritized fish blockages for replacement based on amount of habitat to be opened up, landowner willingness, and salmon usage. This project was located on Stearns Creek, which was determined a system with salmon usage containing few blockages on the main stem. This was a high priority project detailed in the Lead Entity Work Plan for WRIAs 22 and 23 and opened up more spawning and rearing habitat than any other barrier assessed. Coho, cutthroat, and steelhead currently inhabit Stearns Creek and the system was documented as having Chum Salmon utilizing the habitat in the past. This project was located 2.8 miles from the confluence to the Chehalis River and is the first barrier on Stearns Creek. It included the removal of three existing culverts and replacing them with a railcar bridge that will allow fish of all ages and lifestyles to migrate up and down stream. The Priority Index number for this barrier was 49.98. A total of 44,784.8 linear meters of stream was surveyed above this project site. Approximately 23,341.5 square meters of spawning habitat and 73,526.6 square meters of rearing habitat exist upstream from this site. The next two barriers on Stearns Creek, at RM 8.6 and 8.7 were replaced by large culverts funded by the FFFPP. Approximately one mile of stream is passable above RM 8.7 before the next partial blockage.
