DESCRIPTION
Mason County Public Works used this funding to replace a stream crossing on the Beeville Road in western Mason County. The crossing was comprised of two squashed oval culverts. One was 6'x4' and the other was 5'x3'. The smaller culvert was perched two feet above the larger culvert. It only passed the stream during high water events. The larger culvert was a fish passage barrier due to slope. The crossing was rated as 33% passable for six-inch trout by Mason Conservation District. The project installed an 18-foot wide squashed oval aluminum culvert meeting WDFW's "No Slope" design criteria. The slope of the existing culverts was 2.0 and 2.5%. The artificial streambed in the new culvert is 2%. The road crossing is located on Petersen Creek, a tributary to the East Fork of the Satsop River. Mason Conservation District conducted a field survey of the stream above the crossing in 2003. They assigned a PI of 24.8 to its replacement. The project has opened 6,102 meters of habitat containing 9,009 square meters of spawning and 10,494 square meters of rearing habitat. This crossing was the lowermost remaining fish passage barrier on a county road as Petersen Creek flows to the East Fork of the Satsop. The 765 acre watershed above the crossing is owned primarily by Green Diamond Resource Company and managed under a Habitat Conservation Plan. Fish use in the stream includes chum, coho, coastal and resident cutthroat.
