DESCRIPTION
Quinault Indian Nation requests $2.0 million dollars to continue the Upper Quinault River Restoration Program during the 2023-2025 Biennium. Project areas are located in the 12-mile (9,600 acre) restoration reach of the Quinault River in Jefferson and Grays Harbor Counties. The goal of the program is to restore river and forest natural habitat forming processes that 1) create and maintain productive salmon and wildlife habitats, 2)reduce risks of bank erosion and channel migration to landowners, infrastructure and the Quinault Valley community, and 3) provide local and regional jobs. Restoration benefits include 1) protecting and restoring in-stream salmon habitats that provide essential spawning and rearing areas for salmonids and other fish species and 2) building engineered log jams to stabilize the river channel and planting native trees to promote development of mature floodplain forest. Salmonid species benefiting include Quinault River sockeye, chinook, coho, chum, steelhead, and native char (Bull Trout and Dolly Varden). Wildlife such as Roosevelt elk and marbled murrelet will benefit from restoration of mature floodplain forests and native vegetation. The scope of work includes a geomorphic assessment, restoration design plans, permitting, materials procurement, forest restoration operations, non-native plant surveys and treatment, engineered log jam construction, construction oversight, effectiveness monitoring, community outreach, project management and reporting.
