The Quinault Indian Nation (QIN) received $2.05 million from the State of Washington Capital Budget to fund Phase 2 Upper Quinault River Restoration Program activities during the period January 2019 through December 2020. The Upper Quinault River watershed is located on the westside of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The restoration worksites were located in Jefferson County and Grays Harbor County. The state funding provided QIN and the State of Washington Department of Natural Resources with financial resources necessary to continue Phase 2 restoration of the upper Quinault River following methods and procedures described in the Salmon Habitat Restoration Plan - Upper Quinault River (QIN 2008). The overall goal of the project is to restore natural habitat forming processes that provide healthy instream salmon habitat and riparian forest conditions. Phase 2 activities included river channel surveys, river restoration design plan updates, landowner agreements, project management, communications and outreach, a geomorphic assessment, hydraulic model updates, permitting and environmental compliance, materials procurement (large wood materials and tree seedlings), forest stand surveys and tree planting operations, invasive plant surveys and treatment, engineered logjam construction, monitoring, and reporting. Fish species that benefitted from Phase 2 operations were Quinault River sockeye (Blueback), spring chinook, fall chinook, coho, chum, steelhead, cutthroat trout, native char (Dolly Varden and Bull Trout); and Pacific lamprey. Phase 2 provided multiple benefits for fish, people, and wildlife including 1) improved in-stream spawning and rearing habitats for salmon, 2) improved riparian forest habitat conditions for wildlife, 3) reduced risks to landowner property and roads infrastructure from bank erosion and channel migration; and 4) supported local and regional jobs and businesses.
