Over the past 10 years TNC has been acquiring and protecting acreage along the Clearwater and Hoh Rivers on the Washington Coast to create restored river pathways to connect the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary to protected old growth, undisturbed forests in federal and state land in mountain headwaters. The Hoh-Clearwater Restoration Project (HCRP) gave us a significant head start in addressing the problems left behind by previous industrial landowners, whether it was eroding roads and fish barriers or overstocked monocultures from plantation management. During this project TNC took a wide-sweeping approach to restoration for the benefit of fish and wildlife species, focusing on restoring ecosystem processes as well as doing direct restoration in the stream systems. Where we installed 8 in-stream large wood structures, we planted 3.7 acre of the floodplain with shade tolerant conifer to replace the wood in centuries to come. Over 2019-2021 525 acres of upland forests that had been harvested by industrial landowners were thinned to encourage the development of large diameter trees, and a diverse, resilient, heterogenous forest that will contribute hydrologically and physically to stream function. Three undersized and high risk for failure fish barriers were addressed in Summer 2019, opening up a mile of habitat for spawning salmonids. 41 culverts and 48 miles of roadways that had been eroding hillsides and delivering sediments to streams were removed, replaced, and repaired, then paired with weed control to create functional, low impact roadways throughout the project waterway. Weed control was performed on areas with high risk for spread, and 300 acres between the worksites was completed, often requiring repeat year to year treatments to ensure seed bank exhaustion. In total, 300 acres of invasive species in a mix of roadway, riparian, pasture, forest, and rock pit sites were treated. Finally, we improved and installed a new water access and boat launch site on the Clearwater River that can be used by fisherman and other river users. Overall we employed 11 companies and created a full time position at the Nature Conservancy to manage the project, 75% of which was based in coastal counties.
