DESCRIPTION
This project was Phase II of the F-15 Road Impounded Pond Enhancement project to decommission the road and restore fish passage to a road-impounded pond that created a off-chennal connection to the Quinault River in Grays Harbor County. When originally constructed, the F-15 roadbed and a 36” culvert were installed through a wetland in the floodplain of the Quinault River several decades ago. The undersized culvert was chronically bloched due to beaver activity. This combined with the road prism blocked fish passage to both sides of the off-channel pond and wetland habitat. The upstream side of the culvert was a 2.2 acre wetland with suitable Coho rearing habitat. Downstream is a 7 acre wetland connected to a channel that flows into the Lower Quinault River. By re-establishing fish passage the wetlands become contiguous and can now be utilized for additional rearing habitat. This project implemented the design that eliminated the road impoundment by removing the culvert, lowering and abandoning the road prism, seeded the abandoned road bed with a native mix to reduce potential sedimentation from the abandoned road, maintained water levels in the wetland, and connected both sides of the wetland allowing additional off-channel access. Implementing the V-shape channel design by removal of portions of the road bed (low in the middle, high on the ends) collects the water traveling around, through, and over the beaver dam and into the center of the V-channel in the road bed. Large rocks were installed to help to roughen the modified channel across the road bed to keep everything very fish friendly. By re-establishing connectivity, additional wetland habitat will be available for Coho rearing.
