DESCRIPTION
The Quinault Indian Nation completed construction of the Alder Creek Side Channel Pilot Project in 2008. The project consisted of building 12 engineered logjams (ELJs), an island-edge tree reinforced log lattice (TRL), and stabilizing an existing natural logjam with log pilings. The purpose of the project was to initiate restoration of the upper Quinault River and to demonstrate the restoration approach identified in the Salmon Habitat Restoration Plan-Upper Quinault River (QIN 2008). The plan (and pilot project) is a result of recommendations made in the Geomorphic Assessment of the Quinault River, Washington (USBOR 2005). The plan is a comprehensive restoration strategy based on nearly 30 years of riverine-forest-salmon habitat scientific research. The ELJs and TRL were designed by ENTRIX, Inc. ENTRIX also provided construction oversight and certification for the completed structures. The structures were built by DO Construction with labor provided by local contractors. Logs for the project were provided by Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. Quinault Valley Forestry transported and stored the logs used in the project. The project was completed in compliance with all state and federal regulatory permits and consultations.
