DESCRIPTION
The Quinault Indian Nation used this funding to replace a partial fish barrier culvert on a WRIA # 21-0143 tributary to the Middle Fork Salmon River. The barrier consisted of a 72-inch culvert located on US Forest Service Road 2120 at milepost 0.95. This road provides access to Quinault Indian Nation (QIN) lands and Olympic National Forest lands. The culvert that was replaced is located on the tributary stream 110 feet above the Salmon River at RM 13.4. The undersized culvert was a partial barrier to adult salmonid migration and a full barrier to juvenile passage. High velocities and a 4.5 foot culvert outfall drop contribute to the barrier. The barrier culvert was replaced with an 18' span, 95' long open bottomed arch culvert that now provides unimpeded access to 0.8 miles of spawning and rearing habitat for coho, steelhead and cutthroat. Upon project completion the site was revegetated with grass and conifer plantings. Partners in this work included the Olympic National Forest.
