DESCRIPTION

The Quileute Tribe will be implementing restoration actions throughout the first two miles of the Quillayute River to restore flood plain connectivity, improve habitat and address erosion at Thunder Field in La Push, Washington. Actions consist of a combination of deformable log jams with a minor log revetment to stabilize the riverbank at Thunder Field as well as construct a boat launch to provide easier access for tribal fisherman. Other actions include excavation of side channels for high flows and to provide off-channel habitat. Log structures will be designed to withstand a 100-year flood event, while also allowing flows to activate the Smith Slough floodplain in a manner that protects the village of La Push from risks of avulsions and flooding.

The Quileute Tribe implemented restoration actions in the lower Quillayute River in the project area known as “Reach 3”. Reach 3 is between river miles 1.7-3.4 and includes land within both the Quileute Reservation and Olympic National Park. The primary project areas within Reach 3 include Thunder Field, the Mora Floodplain, and the Quileute Floodplain. The goals of the project were to 1) reduce avulsion and flood risk in the Tribal village of La Push, 2) Reduce erosion of Quileute Reservation lands at Thunder Field, 3) Improve salmon habitat in the lower Quillayute River, 4) Improve floodplain connection in the lower river, and 5) Minimize negative impacts to Tribal fishing while achieving the other goals. We installed a total of eight large engineered log jams, 41 floodplain habitat log jams, and three excavated side channels. The south bank of Reach 3 is in Quileute Reservation land and includes Thunder Field and the Quileute Floodplain. The north bank of Reach 3 is on Olympic National Park land and includes the Mora Floodplain. At Thunder Field, we installed a fish-friendly log revetment (consists of 5 consecutive revetment wood structures) to limit further bank erosion and a large and a small deflector log jam, which were designed to push flows away from Thunder Field and across to the Mora Floodplain. On the Mora Floodplain, we excavated 1 large side channel and installed 20 small floodplain habitat structures throughout the flow path. We also installed 5 large apex log jams, designed to split some of the flow into the floodplain. On the Quileute Floodplain, we excavated 2 side channels and installed 21 small floodplain log jams throughout. We also installed one large apex log jam at the downstream end of the Quileute Floodplain designed to split flows. After construction, we installed 9,900 live plants and spread 149.5 of seed throughout the disturbed areas and in the riparian zone in 2023. After monitoring plant survival, we installed an additional 4,400 live plants in 2024.
