DESCRIPTION
This project will replace an undersized shotgun culvert which blocks all fish passage on a tributary to Nolan Creek in the lower Hoh River watershed with a 60 by 21 foot concrete bridge. A bridge is required because of the depth of the streambed and the elevation of the existing road surface. The culvert passes beneath the N-1000, a well used forest access road. Between 1.2 and 3 miles of upstream creek will be opened up for the use of Chinook salmon, coho, cutthroat and steelhead trout. Bull trout have also been documented in adjacent Nolan Creek. This tributary has been blocked to fish passage since construction of the forest road and has also built up a deposit of sediment upstream of the culvert. A preliminary channel will be cut through the sediment plug which will be given time to regrade and stabilize. The sediment will be allowed to pass downstream and deposit in the lower boulder and cobble armored creekbed. If needed, further upstream habitat restoration will be done after the channel has stabilized. The site also has good potential to serve as off channel and over winter habitat for juvenile salmonids in lower Nolan. Partners to the Hoh River Trust, a non profit small forest landowner, include the Hoh Tribe, the IAC, WADNR, Pacific Coast Salmon Coalition and the Wild Salmon Center. DNR contributed engineering expertise and $10,000.
