On July 17th, 2017, the removal and correction of four barriers on Thunder Road began and continued until mid-September. The first step was getting the road suitable for heavy machinery, so the road was brushed, the dredge gravel was hauled in, and a few spots the road had to be scrapped and layered with riprap/fabric/gravel to adequately treat it. This step of the process required more work and material than originally budgeted, thus increasing project costs, because the soils were not as firm as assumed in the original designs. Fortunately, the sponsor was able to secure additional match to pay for the additional costs for the project. The next step was installing the culvert 1, 2, and 3, but once this was completed we could fill the culverts with streambed material which were within 1/4 mile of each other along the access road. The last site was the bridge installation, which at each stream crossing we had to create suitable material for the structure to go on top of the road prism. The crushed gravel was graded and rolled to help with longevity of the road and reduce water quality issues. This work provided fish access to refugia, and improved the surface of one mile of road with runoff to fish-bearing waters. The salmonid runs include coho, steelhead, Chinook, Fall chum, sea-run cutthroat, and resident cutthroat that all utilize this part of the watershed and migrate off-reservation into waters co-managed with the State of Washington. The refugia opportunities are essential in this part of the Quillayute, which is particularly vulnerable to extreme weather.
