DESCRIPTION
The Hoh River Trust treated two sites in this project. Site 1 is on an unnamed tributary to the Lower Hoh River with a crossing having two very old damaged culverts. These will be removed and the crossing laid back to natural contours. The road will be decommisioned, producing a larger than normal riparian leave zone. Fish species include coho, cuthroat and sculpins. The Hoh Tribe and Pacific Coastal salmon Coalition are both partners and are very interested in fixing this. The Hoh Tribe will do the revegegation after culvert removals. The second site is on a tributary to Nolan Creek on the Jefferson Pit Rd. and is complex. The existing road was built within a riparian zone and either backed up a wetland on one side or was built through it. The single 24" culvert is regularly plugged by beavers despite replacement after the previous owner's recent harvest. The site has perennial flooding and erosion problems, which both drop sediment into the lower fish creek and block upstream passage. Fish species seen at the culvert were coho and sculpins. The upstream pond/or wetland can dry up in late summer, depending on precip. It may or may not be suitable habitat for anadromous fish, however there are fish habitat upstream of it. Since beavers will likely plug any newer replacement culverts, a hardened ford is proposed for this site. This road must remain open for access to lands past this culvert.
