DESCRIPTION
The City of Bellingham will use this grant for the Little Squalicum Estuary Restoration project, located on the Bellingham Bay shoreline 2 miles east of the Nooksack River Delta. This project will restore tidal and sediment processes, improve fish passage, and return 2.4 acres of saltmarsh, mudflat and estuary habitats to an area where historical embayments have been lost. The estuary will provide juvenile rearing, refuge, foraging, and osmoregulatory habitats for multiple salmonid species including our target species: ESA-listed Puget Sound Chinook. Other priority species supported by this project include steelhead, coho, and southern resident killer whales. Finally, select excavated sediment material will be reused as beach nourishment to expand and enhance documented forage fish spawning habitat down-drift. In addition, ALEA funding will fund shifting existing trails west to accommodate the estuary footprint, and installing a new trail network along with the new pedestrian bridge at the estuary mouth. This project was identified in the WRIA 1 Nearshore and Estuarine Assessment and Restoration Plan (CGS 2013) as one of the last remaining opportunities for estuary habitat expansion in WRIA 1. Additionally, "restoration of non-natal estuaries" and enhancing a "forage fish spawning beach" are both prioritized actions in the WRIA 1 Salmon Recovery Plan. This project has broad support and is the result of over a decade of collaboration between the public, community partners, and
