The project successfully completed 4.85 acres of coastal wetland habitat restoration, including the construction of a 2.4-acre estuary, in a portion of Bellingham Bay where the shoreline is largely developed and historic estuaries have been significantly modified. The project also successfully enhanced 0.27 miles (1.16 acres) of forage fish spawning habitat through beneficial reuse of suitable excavated sediment. The project restored tidal and sedimentary processes, improved fish passage, and returned saltmarsh, mudflat and estuary habitats. Restoration activities provide juvenile rearing, foraging, and osmoregulatory habitat for multiple salmonid species including our target species: ESA-listed Puget Sound Chinook. Other priority species supported by this project include steelhead trout, coho salmon, and southern resident killer whales. Clean, graded surfaces were mulched, planted with native plants, augmented with large wood, and protected with fencing in accordance with the project design. The project improved water quality in Little Squalicum Creek and Bellingham Bay, including improving dissolved oxygen, fecal coliform, and temperature parameters at the mouth of Little Squalicum Creek just 2 miles east of the Nooksack River Delta. Clean, graded surfaces were mulched, planted with approximately 20,000 native plants, augmented with large wood, and protected with fencing in accordance with the project design. Excavation of the estuary included removal and off-site disposal of 4,900 tons of contaminated soil. The new estuary provides restored tidal processes, including interaction with a new estuarine and riparian habitats stabilized with approximately 20,000 new native plants. The project also successfully enhanced 1.16 acres (10,000 cubic yards) of forage fish spawning habitat. The nourishment area began approximately 50 feet west of the current pier and extended for 1,430 linear feet to the west, with sediment from the estuary excavation used as beach nourishment material. Prior to nourishment, the beach was dominated by cobble with patches of sand and pebbles and was largely too coarse for surf smelt spawning. Additionally, riprap boulders and other debris that had migrated onto the beach face was removed.
