Capital Land Trust restored salmon habitat on two adjoining properties: Allison Springs, owned by the City of Olympia, and Randall, owned by Capitol Land Trust, in Olympia. Both properties had been altered substantially from historic conditions. The Allison Springs property had 8 artificially created impoundments fed by numerous freshwater springs, seeps and streams on the property which feed into Eld Inlet. There were 10-12 manmade structures which created and manipulated the impoundments including culverts, dams, tide gates, and weirs constructed from various materials including concrete, rip rap, sandbags, wood, and steel. Some of the barriers were derelict and allowed limited fish passage, and others were complete barriers. Some of the lower ponds were tidally inundated. The wetlands and estuarine areas on the property had been modified so as to impact the overall hydrology, tidal exchange and sediment transport processes of the site. On the Randall property, the impacted shoreline areas were armored with rip rap, garbage, and fill placed to protect the three residential structures on the property. The fill and debris armoring on the shoreline had altered the habitat connectivity between the shallow nearshore environment and the native saltmarsh vegetation evident on nearby undisturbed areas. The decaying structures and garbage accumulated on the Randall property, as well as the failing septic system associated with the structures, likely increased the contaminants and nutrients running off the property into Eld Inlet. All these structures have been removed from both sites, 3 acres of invasive plant species were treated and 5 acres of native trees and shrubs were planted. On the Allison Springs property, the eight impoundments were breached to create two free-flowing spring-fed channels. These projects benefit chum, coho, and chinook salmon.
