DESCRIPTION
The goals of this project were to: 1. Inventory existing off-channel habitat. 2. Assess sites with a potential to be restored or preserved. 3. Produce a landowner parcel specific prioritized list of sites with restoration or preservation potential. 4. Incorporate the list into the Salmon and Steelhead Habitat Inventory and Assessment Program (SSHIAP) database. 5. Contract an engineer to create 30% design concepts for the top restoration sites where landowner permission has been secured. The Nisqually Chinook Recovery Plan and the Salmon and Steelhead Habitat Limiting Factors Report identified problems with off-channel habitat abundance in some reaches of the mainstem Nisqually River, the Mashel River and Ohop Creek and recommended actions to evaluate current, historic and potential creation of off-channel habitat. The specific areas assessed were prioritized based on the recommendations of these reports and on consultations with area fish biologists. The general area inventoried included the mainstem Nisqually River (miles 2.0 - 40.8) and the lower sections of two of its major tributaries; Ohop Creek and the Mashel River. These areas have high fish usage and known problems with lack of off-channel habitat, so they are areas that needed to be inventoried and assessed for restoration and/or preservation. A separate assessment of other lower priority tributaries to the Nisqually River is planned in the future.
