Fish First used this funding to complete a restoration project located on Cedar Creek near Amboy in Clark County. The objectives of this project in Cedar Creek were to restore the structure and complexity of 1,400 feet of stream channel. Past anthropogenic activities (splash dams, excessive logging, and grazing) have essentially caused Cedar Creek to become one long shallow unstable "run" with no riffles, pools, or protective cover for salmonids (coho, Chinook, and steelhead) that once made extensive use of this reach of Cedar Creek, on the North Fork Lewis River System. The project involved adding root wads to provide in-stream large woody debris; installing rock cross-vanes to catch gravel to return the pool-to-riffle ratio function and allow eroded banks to re-vegetate; planting trees and shrubs to provide shading and cover; and re-activating a small side-channel to furnish rearing and flood protection to fry and juveniles. This project restored high quality spawning habitat and resting pools, reduced summer stream temperatures, and increased cover and protection for adult Chinook, coho, and steelhead.
