DESCRIPTION
This project will address the lack of LWD in the Naselle River watershed and how the lack of LWD has caused extreme channel incision and lack of quality spawning and rearing habitat. This project will address the top-limiting factor in the Naselle Watershed and will stabilize .20 miles of stream bank by the placement of engineered LWD. This project will produce cover, gravel deposition and stream bank stabilization. This is the number one limiting factor for the Naselle River in the Willapa Bay, WRIA #24 Strategic Plan for Salmon Recovery. This project will benefit all salmonid species in the Naselle Watershed. Due to the extreme stream velocities that occur in the fall and winter months, LWD will be placed using the piling technique, with chain and soil anchors. There will be 300 pieces of LWD placed in this area. This will produce cover for juvenile salmonids and create a mechanism to recruit future LWD. The placement of LWD will also slow down high winter flows allowing future spawning gravel deposition. Up stream log groins will be installed to redirect flows and recruit additional LWD and future spawning gravels. The landowner is extremely supportive of this project. The landowners allow public access to their property. This project has strong community support. After construction the PCD will plant native riparian vegetation to NRCS specifications within the project boundaries. Riparian Vegetation will provide root mass and long-term LWD recruitment.
