DESCRIPTION
Thurston Conservation District used this funding for a restoration project at the intersection of Beatty Creek and Arneson Lane in the Eld watershed. There were two culverts that were impassible to salmonids due to steep slope, insufficient water capacity for peak flow events, and a total drop of 10.5 feet. This spillway was depriving the downstream channel of crucial gravel and debris recruitment necessary for salmon habitat. Furthermore, it altered the upstream system by creating a small pond, where sediment was accumulating. The project objectives removed one spillway and two culverts, excavated accumulated sediments, and installed an 80-foot long by 14 foot wide steel fabricated bridge. The pond and stream were excavated to allow habitat restoration. Stream-bed controls were installed at a 5% slope from the downstream channel, through the pond and 100 feet upstream of the pond. Total length of channel restoration was 300 feet. Riparian plants were installed to restore vegetation and allow for shade and LWD. The removal of these obstacles reopened approximately 1.33 miles of stream available to coho, steelhead, and cutthroat. The participating members of this project were the Thurston Conservation District, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the adjacent landowners.
